Now that you have a list of potential career paths that match your skills, interests, and values, the next step is figuring out how you get onto those paths. Early Career Researchers may already know that they are choosing an academic path. However, there are many different paths within academia that you may choose to embark on in the future.You can use this opportunity to explore these paths.

Choose 3 career paths from your IDP in step 1. We are going to ask you to do a little research on how to get you on the path. The AAAS IDP offers a starting point regarding learning about these paths. Go to “Read About Careers” under “Career Exploration” and navigate through the tabs that map onto your 3 career paths. You will find in these sections websites, articles, and book suggestions. Feel free to Google and talk to peers, mentors, and other people in your network to learn more about your potential career paths.

In the following sections, we are going to ask you to process what you have learned for each career path. As you process the information for each career path, think about next steps in the short-term and long-term.

The purpose of an IDP is to help you think ahead to get the next career step you want through personal planning and mentorship with DIVERT PIs.

The next and final step is to select your preferred mentor for the Winter/Spring 2025 term! You will be meeting twice with one of our DIVERT Principal Investigators to discuss your IDP plans and to receive mentorship on any topics that Fellows choose. One meeting will be between March-April 2025, and one meeting will be in June 2025. They will have access to your submitted materials in advance to this meeting.
